Summer 2002

While technically our "big" vacation took place in Spring, I've titled this page Summer 2002.  This page chronicles in photos our trip to California, which consisted of around 6,000 of driving between home and 4 different camping spots.
We also visited Ohio twice during June -- pictures from those trips are shown on the "Family Pictures" section.

Please enjoy our photos - click on each one for a bigger view:

Los Angeles/San Diego

After leaving Houston, we stopped in Lubbock to pick up Angela and spent the first night in Flagstaff before continuing on to Los Angeles.  Danny stayed home to keep an eye on the house.  We had our traditional trailer flat tire just outside of Fort Sumner, New Mexico.  Luckily the tire was not ruined and just needed to be re-mounted.  After 18-years or so of pulling a trailer the tire shop manager was the first to ever give me a straight answer on how much air pressure should be in the tires.  His advice apparently worked, or perhaps it was the cooler temperature, but that was the only flat tire we had.

The Pacific Coast Highway and Oregon Coast

We drove on the Pacific Coast Highway from Malibu almost all the way to San Francisco, then drove on other portions of the highway from San Francisco to Oregon.  We were looking forward to the cliff-lined roads shown in movies but were unprepared for the beautiful sights seen along the way.  As usual, our pictures cannot do justice to show the beauty of the California coast...but we tried anyway.

where the Pacific Coast Highway ends.  We could see the rocky coast from our trailer.

San Francisco

We thought that since Los Angeles was so big we'd devote more time to that city.  In hindsight we wish we would have allotted more time to the San Francisco area.  The beautiful hills of the city, and the endless fields of grape vines to the North made for an inviting place to visit.

Redwood National Forest

The California coast is the place best suited for growth of these ancient giants, many are over 1,000 years old.  From a business standpoint I can see why lumber companies want to cut down these trees, but from my normal state of mind I cannot understand why anyone would want to destroy something so old, rare and beautiful.  Due to heavy rains and a lack of raincoats we were unable to hike to the site of the oldest and tallest patch of Redwoods.  But the short visit to this area gave us a taste of what this area must have been like before the white man began occupying North America.
The low-light of this leg of the journey came courtesy of the California Highway Patrol.  Just a few moments after re-entering California from Oregon I was blessed with a speeding ticket.  The speed limit for cars pulling trailers in California is 55 mph.  I was going 68...everybody else was allowed to go 70.  Including court costs and defensive driving I ended up paying $320.00!

Yosemite National Park

We'd heard it was beautiful, but it was absolutely breathtaking.  Even though 1/3rd of the park was closed due to a late season snow storm that hit while we were driving in from Oregon, we got our fill of waterfalls and panoramic mountain scenery.

Once at the base of the fall, a nearly vertical set of 600 granite steps

foot high fall sprays constantly.  But once on top (upper right) the
view is spectacular.

Las Vegas and Hoover Dam

The final stop of our trip took us to Las Vegas.  We spent only one evening in the city, but Angela showed us around and we saw all the lights...I mean sights!  Just outside of Las Vegas is Hoover Dam and Lake Meade.  One could probably spend all day just trying to figure out how the dam was built literally in the middle of nowhere.  But we were anxious to get back home and spent only an hour or so.
